We Need to Talk About Floral Foam
It is everywhere, it is convenient, and it is genuinely terrible for the planet.
So what is floral foam, exactly?
Floral foam, most commonly known by the brand name Oasis, is that green spongy brick you see stuffed inside flower arrangements. It holds water and keeps stems in place, which sounds great until you find out it is made from phenol-formaldehyde resin, a type of plastic that does not biodegrade. Like, ever. Or at least not within any meaningful human timeframe.
When it gets wet and handled, it breaks down into microplastics. Those microplastics end up in waterways, in soil, and eventually in the food chain. It also releases dust particles that are considered harmful to inhale, which is a fun detail nobody puts on the packaging.
A single block of floral foam crumbles into billions of microplastic particles over time. There is currently no recycling stream for it. Once it is used, it goes to landfill. There is no other use. It is one-and-done.
Why it is genuinely hard to give it up?
Here is where it gets complicated. Floral foam is not just popular because florists are lazy. It does things that are actually difficult to replicate.
Holds water longer - Keeps arrangements hydrated for days, which matters a lot for large event installs.
Precise placement - You can stick a stem exactly where you want it and it stays there. Seriously useful for complex designs.
Pre-soakable - You can prep arrangements well in advance, which is essential for large weddings and events.
Works at any angle - Horizontal installs, overhead pieces, and hanging work that would be impossible with a vase.
Who actually needs this stuff?
Let's be real: floral foam is not something every home arranger or small-batch florist needs. But there are cases where it is genuinely hard to work around. That being said, there are still alternative ways to do so.
Large-scale event florists doing hundreds of centerpieces on a tight deadline
Funeral arrangements, where longevity and specific placement matter deeply to grieving families
Complex structural installs like arches, pillars, or hanging ceiling pieces
If you are in one of these categories, you are not a villain for still using it while better options catch up. The key is being intentional about when it is truly necessary versus just convenient.
Alternatives that work
01 Chicken wire
A crumpled ball of chicken wire inside a vase or vessel gives stems plenty of anchor points. It takes a bit more time to arrange but it is fully reusable and infinitely better for the environment. Works best for loose, whimsical, or garden-style designs.
02 Flower frogs and pin holders
These little metal or ceramic discs with pins are a classic Japanese ikebana tool that the rest of the world is finally rediscovering. Heavy enough to stay put, reusable forever, and they look beautiful. Great for vessel arrangements.
03 Biodegradable foam alternatives
Brands like Smithers-Oasis have released foam alternatives (like OASIS Floral Foam Maxlife or Agra Wool) that claim to biodegrade more responsibly. These are still being debated in the industry, but they are a better option than conventional foam when you genuinely need the foam-like structure.
04 Moss and natural materials
Wet moss can hold stems and water surprisingly well. It is 100% compostable and gives arrangements a lush, organic base. It works better for shorter arrangements and garden-style installs than for precise structured work.
05 Tape grids
A grid of florist tape across the top of a vase or vessel creates structure for stems without any foam at all. It is a great everyday solution for simple arrangements and costs almost nothing.
None of these perfectly replace floral foam in every situation, and that is okay. The goal is reducing use where you can, not achieving perfection overnight.
If you do use it, here is how to dispose of it properly
Since there is no recycling option for conventional floral foam, disposal is about minimizing damage as much as possible.
Let it dry out completely before disposal. Wet foam crumbles into microplastics more easily when handled, so drying it reduces the spread.
Place it in a sealed bag before putting it in general waste. This contains the particles and keeps them out of soil and water during transport to landfill.
Do not rinse it down the sink or crumble it into the garden. Both of those routes send microplastics directly into water systems and soil.
Do not compost it. It is plastic. It will not break down and will contaminate your compost.
Check if your local florist or event company participates in any foam take-back programs. A small number of suppliers are experimenting with these, though they are not yet widespread
